Cyabra Launches Deepfake Detection

Coordinated Disinformation Targeting Romania’s Election

Following the annulment of Romania's election, Cyabra revealed a coordinated campaign backed by Russia aimed at manipulating the country’s electoral crisis.

Cyabra analyzed online activity related to Romania’s election crisis between December 15, 2024, and January 15, 2025, uncovering a coordinated Russian-backed disinformation campaign.

16% of X accounts involved were fake, distorting public discourse and boosting far-right narratives. A third of the engagement on a key post by far-right candidate Călin Georgescu came from inauthentic profiles.

Using bots, fake accounts, and hashtag hijacking, the campaign amplified anti-Western messages and suppressed claims of Russian interference, with activity peaking before major protests.
