How Bots Are Shaping The Trade Discourse
Following the recent trade controversy — the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Trump — Cyabra analyzed social media activity on X to assess how fake accounts are shaping public opinion.
Following President Trump’s February 1 tariff announcement, viral conversations on X spiked between January 28 and February 6, 2025.
13% of the accounts in the conversation were fake, with a reach of up to 3 million views. Of these, 28% engaged with a single Trump post, driving a spike in negative sentiment on February 2.
These inauthentic profiles pushed isolationist and protectionist narratives, encouraged boycotts of American products, and amplified nationalist rhetoric to influence public opinion and undermine economic cooperation.
