Unmasking The Bot-Driven Boycott Of Amazon

Following Amazon’s decision to end its DEI programs, Cyabra uncovered a fake network fueling viral boycott campaigns and distorting public opinion online.

Cyabra analyzed viral conversations on X between January 1 and June 20, 2025, following Amazon’s announcement to roll back its DEI programs—triggering two major boycott waves led by the “Economic Blackout” movement.

35% of the 2,889 profiles analyzed were fake, responsible for over 1,500 posts amplifying hashtags like #BoycottAmazon, #AmazonFail, and #EconomicBlackout—framing the backlash as a grassroots uprising.

Fake profiles drove a 905% spike in negative sentiment in February and a 26,500% surge in April; by June, bots made up 55% of accounts discussing Amazon, prolonging the narrative and manipulating consumer perception at scale.
